Protection Against Scanning and Copying - No Dots

Another way in which DPS images protect against scanning and copying comes from the fact that, unlike all scanners and printers, DoubleTake™ screens do not use dots. DPS images are created in the computer without using dots. Figure 6 represents a digital original as it would look before being printed. When DPS images are printed, whatever printer is used must convert the images into a dot form first, because that's how all printers print. So this becomes our first generation print (Figure 7). The DoubleTake™ character forms are readably intact, but, they have been rasterized (converted to dots) once, in order to be printed. Would-be counterfeiters would start with this print, and scan it in order to acquire an image for their nefarious purpose.

Assuming counterfeiters can overcome the induced moiré barrier, all scanners, just like all printers, are dot based. So, the counterfeiter's scan becomes a second-generation image, which has been rasterized first by the printer used to print the original, and then rasterized again by a scanner (Figure 8). Now the criminal must edit (our next level of protection deals with alteration) and print the secondgeneration image, which results in yet another rasterizing pass through the printer. This final print is severely degraded and unreadable (Figure 9).
