Another way in which DPS images protect against scanning and copying comes from the fact that, unlike all scanners and printers, DoubleTake™ screens do not use dots. DPS images are created in the computer without using dots. Figure 6 represents a digital original as it would look before being printed. When DPS images are printed, whatever printer is used must convert the images into a dot form first, because that's how all printers print. So this becomes our first generation print (Figure 7). The DoubleTake™ character forms are readably intact, but, they have been rasterized (converted to dots) once, in order to be printed. Would-be counterfeiters would start with this print, and scan it in order to acquire an image for their nefarious purpose.
