DoubleTake

Based on the patented DoubleTake method, the DoubleTake Personalization System (DPS) is a unique security feature that creates personalized identification graphics which are extremely resistant to scanning, copying and alteration. Using DPS, Identification Documents are personalized with secure graphic content through the use of primary color screens, which are built from recognizable characters as opposed to dots. The end result is a graphic of recognizable characters whose patterns can be unique to each individual document.

Almost all of the printed graphic images we see around us are created in the same way. An image's colours are simplified into those which can be displayed using just three primary colours: cyan, magenta, and yellow. Black is often added as a fourth primary colour. Grade school art class taught us that mixing primary colours makes a new colour. Just like combining red and yellow makes orange, the combination of the primary colours used in printing make a rainbow of colour possible. The mechanism for mixing these primary colours is the halftone dot screen. Each primary colour is screened using a grid of dots, where the size of each dot varies in comparison to the remaining white-space. Each primary colour is treated the same way, so that when they are overlaid, they combine to convey a broad range of colours. All printed graphics, from the ultra-high-end to the stuff you print on your ink-jet printer, are created using this dot-screen system, often called Process Colour

DoubleTake images are different. They do not use dots. Rather, DoubleTake screens are built from recognizable characters. They can convey any message desired, from a person's name to your grandmother's recipe for chocolate-chip cookies. The Figure illustrates the unique DoubleTake character based screens, which in this case spell the name Jane C. Dough. The DPS program can use any phrase or set of words or alpha-numeric characters to create these screens, on a customized, image-by-image basis. Each graphic image run through the DPS can be encoded with its own unique set of characters in which the images are inseparably formed.
